Week 9 is Social Justice week. We will be finding out about migration.
You need to find out where your ancestors or relatives came from.
You might be able to find out the dates of travel and how they got to New Zealand, also any challenges that they faced.
We will place your families journey on a map in our classroom.

  2. Me, my 2 sisters and my parents came from Philippines. My mom went first here at New Zealand. She went here at 2014. She has to face the new weather, new people, new environment, new system and new language. When my mom got her residency she took us her in New Zealand and we also face what my mom faces plus we also face our new school. My mom has prepared everything for us so it will be easier. Before my mom took us we were so excited. When we got here we are so happy because we are all complete and also a bit sad because some relatives are in Philippines are not with us.
It was really different because we own our house in the Philippines but here we have to rent and be careful with the house as we are not the owner. My father decided not to work because nobody will take care of us. In the Philippines, we have house helpers but here we do have to do all the chores. My little sister was really afraid of going to kindy as she does not know yet how to speak in English and she does not know how to mingle with others so she cried a lot in the school. But as day goes, we are slowly adjusting to New Zealand’s way of life. Me and my sisters can speak and understand English now. My little sister is enjoying in school. My mom is happily working here and my father is enjoying taking care of us. Also, my aunt Rhea and her family is here so we are a big family. We are so happy that winter is over as it is really very cold for us but we are very happy to see the snow in Arthur’s Pass.

  5. I'm not sure if anybody from my mum side or dad's side went to NZ, so here is my story of when we transferred from the Philippines to New Zealand: At 23 of November 2008 2 months after dad went to NZ we went to the Auckland International Airport. We stayed in Auckland for 4 months. Mum and dad didn't know anybody that time. When I went to play centre in Auckland I met a Indian girl, Korean girl and a Greek boy. We went to other places like Hamilton, Taupo, Napier, Wellington and loads more. Then after we stayed there for 4 months we moved to Hawera. I went to a play centre called Hawera Playcentre and also went to a kindy called Koromiko. We also went to other places as well and my first experience with snow was in Mt Ruapehu. I also went to ballet and gymnastics there. Also I went to a school called St Joseph and during school time my mum had my sister, Catherine. My mum also studied to be a cake decorator. Mum, dad and me had made lots of friends there so it was very hard to move to Hokitika. Dad got a job in Hokitika before we went here. So that's how we went to NZ (mostly Hokitika) from the Philippines.

Some of dad's ancestors are from Norway and Germany and Scotland. Dads surname means 'spacious fort'. USAGE: Scottish, English, PRONOUNCED: GAWR-dən. It was originally used in honor of Charles George Gordon (1833-1885), a British general who died defending the city of Khartoum in Sudan. On dads fathers side his earliest relative came to NZ in 1842. His name was George Stanard.

He came to New Zealand in 1927 he departed from South Hampton, England. On the ship Mataroa. He came to New Zealand by himself, his brothers arrived in New Zealand in 1925. He came to New Zealand for a better life as it was the depression in the U.K He landed in New Zealand and went to the Coromandel area and worked for 9 shillings a day until he had saved 8 Pound. When this was achieved he bought a ticket to Australia. He moved back to Waiuta New Zealand in 1932. His challenges were moving to a new country and finding a job and a place to live.
One of his biggest challenges was going to the second world war in Egypt. I got all this information from my great aunty Jennifer Ross who is Nicholas Christie's daughter.
